The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of collaborative reading on learners of Japanese as a second language (JSL). This study included thirty-six intermediate-advanced JSL learners, who were divided in two groups: the collaborative reading group and the non- collaborative one; each was given a sample of expository text to read through. The analysis looked at the learners’ (1) written recall protocols after reading and (2) scores on a comprehension test in which they applied what they had learned through the text to a different situation. The numbers of recalled main ideas, key definitions and their illustrations provided in the text as well as the test scores were considered in the analysis. Results indicated that collaborative reading did not significantly affect the learners’ comprehension of the text. In fact, learners in both groups showed difficulties in understanding the main ideas and definitions, and in reconstructing their knowledge according to the text content. These findings suggest that JSL learners’ comprehension of expository text might not necessarily be improved by solely relying on collaborative reading. Further research is necessary to clarify under what condition(s) collaborative reading can facilitate JSL learners’ reading comprehension.", "subitem_description_type": "Abstract"}]},
