This paper will approach the global phenomenon of modern girl through Shiseido's corporative strategies. The significance of Shiseido derives from the following three factors: 1)its advertisement strategy, 2)its strategy of cultural enlightenment and American style chainstore management model, and 3) the dual character (luxury and military material) of perfumed cosmetic soap as an international commody. Based on these elements, the paper will discuss in what ways the late-comer and colonial characteristics of Japanese capitalism, itself incorporated in the world system, are inscribed in the representations of modern girl.
