According to Schopenhauer, the eternal and innermost essence of existence is Will that is the\
absolute One. Meanwhile, there are various kinds of individualities that are phenomenalized\
embodiments of Will. A human is one of them. However, he or she cannot recognize his or her own\
will, because human eyes are innately covered with an illusionary veil of Maya. Schopenhauer’s Maya\
means such illusions. Schopenhauer enabled people to understand that Will phenomenalizes itself even\
in consciousness. Such recognition made people understand their psychological realities and led them\
to Modernism.\
Conrad’s impressionist writing, such as the preface to e Nigger of the ‘Narcissus’, has many ideas\
similar to Schopenhauer’s. For Conrad, Maya means something like phenomena, impressions, and selfdeceptive\
illusions. The self-deceptive Maya is one of his important themes of literary impressionism.\
Conrad tried not only to disclose the veil of Maya to see the truth, but also to make readers see how\
Maya drives people and what their psychological realities are. While Will is the most important for\
Schopenhauer, Maya is the most important for Conrad as an individual’s reality and truth. Conrad’s\
Maya is based on Schopenhauer’s but Conrad’s idea advanced it a step further.
