紀要論文
This study illuminates the thought of death by WATSUJI Tetsuro, with his view of human body (nikutai). He considers the relation between person and person as the subjective connection of their bodies and cites a double suicide as an example to represent it. He mentions a double suicide done by only lovers, a man and a woman. However, he treats death as the most public affair because some events known as funerals are not individual matters. This paper shows that the death defined by WATSUJI is the negation of human body (nikutai-no-hitei). This idea shows that death as the negation of subjective human body is the affirmation of life (sei-no-koutei), and the loss of individuality means the union to the whole in a human being. However, the death develops further into the affirmation of love (rennai-no-koutei) in the case of a lovers’suicide. WATSUJI uses a lovers’suicide done by the private community to explain a bodily death as the most public phenomenon. This fact proves that he stresses the importance of man and woman as the socio-ethical systems.
