In the case of Princess Guermantes and Albertine, the common terms, kingfisher and peacock, have symbolic allusion: resurrection and metamorphosis. Princess Guermantes is a lady whom, together with her title, the narrator has a high regard for, while Albertine is his love. Long after the death of Albertine, the narrator took the handwriting of another girlfriend of his for that of Albertine's and believes her to still be alive. Also, in a Carpaccio's painting he finds a coat resembling that of Albertine's. Princess Guermantes or her title is succeeded by a bourgeois Mrs. Verdurin. These are their resurrections and metamorphoses. The narrator imagines when Bergotte, a writer, died that the latter is to resurrect in the form of his books. Proust himself had a fear about the future of his works, and yet had a doubt on the Christian belief of the Resurrection.
