Global Collaboration Center of Ochanomizu University has been conducting study tours to developing countries since 2011. This paper examines what do students study through study tours to developing countries, taking study tours to Cambodia in 2017 and 2018 as cases, and scrutinizing students’ discussions and reports.
The significant points that the students have studied and acquired through the study tours are;
- understanding developing countries from diverse viewpoints, based on the information collected from the fields,
- deepening the understandings on poverty,
- deepening the understandings on inequality,
- evolving the perspective to understand developing countries —to observe respectivephenomena from societal structural viewpoint, and also to understand the importance of individual life, and
- improving communication strategy in English.
Through the study tours, the impacts of learning from the fields are significant and the students realize the importance of studying from the fields. These impacts lead to students’ motivation for further study not only on development-related issues but in various fields. The students’ study from the fields can have more long-lasting consequences when it is backed by related preceding and theoretical studies.
