Crystal structures were determined for alkyl 4- [2- (perfluorooctyl) ethoxy] benzoates (F8-n), in order to clarify the intermolecular interaction responsible for the liquid crystalline behavior depending on the alkyl chain lengths. It became clear that the aggregation of perfluoroalkyl chains is formed in the crystal structure of a member which shows S_A phase but not in those with no mesophases. In this work, we have determined the crystal structure of F8-4. It turns out that crystal structures change systematically according to the alkyl chain lengths. Energy calculation for each structure and crystal structure determination for the series with a shorter perfluoroalkyl chain are now being carried out.
