However, it is unclear how the musical elements of declamatory vocal melodies affect performance expression and create this dramatic effect.\nFirst, I classified each melody referred as “declamation” to see how it reflects poetry versification and Italian intonation by interval, the difference in duration between notes, and velocity. I then categorized the orchestral parts into seven textures which were frequently used for particular situations. Subsequently, I\nexamined how the combinations of these classifications work in actual scenes.\nBy analyzing two scenes, I found that the interval and duration between notes in declamatory melodies vary for dramatic situations, not always reflecting versification or intonation within. Further, situations or moods are indicated by orchestral arrangements.\nIn conclusion, Verdi expresses, through the musical elements of vocal melodies, not only intonation or versification but also the tone of characters’ speech.
