Eight imperial waka anthologies were compiled during the Heian period. We call them Hachidai-shu anthologies. An analysis of waka expressions was carried out on them. Waka poetry was originally intended to describe the ‘mind’. Therefore, when the word ‘KOE’ was used, it did not describe what the voice was like, but rather how the poet felt about it. This has been the tradition since the Kokin-waka-shu （the first anthology）. And it was around the time of the Kinyo-waka-shu （the fifth anthology） that the first change regarding the usage of ‘voice’ appeared. The new usage was identified in which the nature of the ‘voice’ was highlighted by comparing the ‘voice’ with other objects. The next change occurred around the time of the Senzai-waka-shu （the seventh anthology）. The new usages were identified for describing the aspect and movement of the ‘voice’. These new usages gained explosive popularity each other, but both of them declined in a short period of time.
