Sex in Education; or, A Fair Chance for the Girls(1873)written by Edward Hammond Clarke, a physician and professor at Harvard Medical School, generated controversy because it said that higher education or co-education could be harmful to women's health from a physiological perspective. Because his experience as a physician and scientific knowledge were greatly admired, his essay had a real impact on women's higher education. However, many of his opponents criticized his aggressive explanation of the link between women's higher education and the ill health of American women; the evils of insufficient education; his way of applying and interpreting natural law; and his hasty generalization of few cases ignoring actual experiences of women.
