In Rashomon, the old woman crouches amidst a heap of corpses, surrounded by their stench. She is depicted through negative animal metaphors, such as“ flesh-eating bird”,“ crow”,“ toad”, and so on. This imagery is seen as consistent with the Genin's psychology with his perspective at the center of the story. However, from an intertextual view of modern literature, I try to deconstruct the consistency of this rhetoric, which ties three elements: negative visual and audible expressions that suggest the old woman's otherworldliness, the Genin's hatred and contempt for the old woman, and his violence toward her.
