A “fair man,” whose beauty exposes him as an object of various gazes, is crucial to a feminist reading because it reveals some instability in a patriarchal society. The “fair man” can be described as an homme fatale, which is associated not with a fair lady who reinforces the Symbolic order but with a femme fatale, who prompts a man to have a close subversive relationship with her and to undermine patriarchal law. The examination of the “fair man” exposes the un-normative gender category at the root of American, white, middle-class male anxiety. Using a psychoanalytical approach, this paper explores how a “fair man,” Clifford, is represented in conjunction with his cousin, Jaffrey Pyncheon.
