However, this is a very modern definition. How was menopause or climacteric defined in the preindustrial society? This paper attempts to understand how menopause was defined in early eighteenth-century Germany. The framework of the discussion relies on the work of Barbara Duden, who clarified the understanding that a physician and his patients had about the human body, in northern Germany around the year 1730.
