When 《Repos》 was exhibited at Salon in 1873 along with 《Le Bon Book》, it was savaged by bitter comments such as “instability, ugly, dirty, unfinished” and by cruel caricatures, while 《Le Bon Book》 which represents male was favorably accepted. Those criticisms insinuate, in the context of those days, the deviation of 《Repos》 from the gender canon and ideology of bourgeois to which she belongs. Here we can see a close relationship between the estimation of the arts works and the canon.
