I shall take a closer look at how women's involvement in the norms and the practices of beauty has been analyzed in the two main perspectives within feminist studies on beauty: beauty-as-oppression and beauty-as-disciplinary-power. Though the latter perspective could overcome the problems which the former has, it has a tendency toward the socially deterministic view on women's beauty practices. Kathy Davis criticizes the overly deterministic accounts of women's beauty practices within beauty-as-disciplinary-power perspective focusing on women's agency, but her approach also could not be all-rounded. It is necessary for feminist studies on beauty practices of women to explore how women's acts could not be determined one-sidedly by the beauty system, focusing on the particular and individual act.
