While previous studies suggest that JS tend to avoid using nos when talking in English, data from naturally occurring talk often include instances in which JS repeat no in succession (e.g., “Did you try the parachute?” “No no no no.”). This study investigates how and why JS repeat no. To that end, it examines how frequently JS and ES repeat no and how they deploy the repetition in conversation.\\\n   The results indicate that JS in fact tend to repeat no more frequently than ES and that the repetition of no may occur in (a) an answer to a given yes/no question, (b) a repair sequence, and (c) a response to compliments received. JS are most likely to repeat no in answers to yes/no questions requesting information or seeking clarification.\\\n   These empirical findings suggest that when JS are motivated to provide a negative answer to such questions, they need to mark the denial/negation in an explicit manner. As their English language capability is too limited to combine a no with an intensifying adverb or a negative clause (e.g., “absolutely no,” “no you can’t”), they opt to rely on less elaborated strategies.
