A careful reading of the composer's letters and prefaces to his publications and some contemporary writings makes it clear that Mocenigo repeatedly prompted Monteverdi to write works in 'genere rappresentativo' at least from 1624 to 1630, a period in which Venice had yet no opera house. In his eighth book of madrigals (1638) Monteverdi referred to Mocenigo twice in a praising tone.
