The results show that both JNS and TNS use “reason” and “direct refusal” as a main structure of their reply. In addition, they tend to add “empathy” to express their feelings of caring for the other party at the beginning of the sentence before the “reason”, while at the end of the sentence they would add a phrase aiming for “maintaining relationships” which is to express the wish to do another activities together if a chance comes up later. In other words, the structure of refusals is composed of “reason” and “direct refusal” as compulsory elements, and “empathy” and “maintaining relationships” as optional elements.
