Japanese learners should understand katakana words in many occasions. More research should be carried out to accumulate data to develop methods and materials for teaching/ learning katakana effectively. This study examines the effects of katakana word instruction on listening tests and learners’ attitude. Forty seven Korean native speakers learning Japanese were divided into two groups. One group was taught katakana words focusing on notations of special morae, dakuon and handakuon. To determine the effect of instruction, listening tests and questionnaire about katakana words were used. Their errors were classified into 16 types and analyzed. The results show that there was a significant change in error rate of both groups but the instructed group tends to improve more. And the results of questionnaire show that after instruction the difficulty of katakana words reduced. It is possible that instructions are effect on learners”
