The aim of the project was to locate the Japanese teaching and learning of the university in a wider context of the general language teaching policy in Finland. Despite the fact that many interviewees say there are demands for high Japanese language proficiency, foreign language teaching at school level is still dominated by European languages, while Japanese language is categorized as a “rare language” and Japanese teaching curriculum at the university level has not yet met essential changes in the last 20 years.\\\nThe first stage of the project consisted of interviews of Finnish people from various walks of life and its publication in Finland. Second stage was translating the Finnish interview text into Japanese and publishing it as a book in Japan.
