Regardless of the context, place, and situation, the Korean translation of the story generally uses active voice in its narration while the Japanese version relies heavily on passive voice. Identical passages from both versions were selected, compared and analyzed. Special attention was paid to the verbs ‘iu’, ‘hanasu’ and ‘kiku’. In standard Korean, these three verbs are usually expressed using active voice, but in everyday Japanese they tend to be used passively. This study focuses on the reasons for such differences even where context and message coincide.
