However, actual situations about loanword usage by English native speakers need to be identical. The purpose of this research is to understand the process involved in the cognition, emotion and usage of loanwords by Japanese learners. An investigatory interview was conducted with 11 Japanese learners who are native speakers of English. The study found that there are two types of cognition regarding loanwords: perceiving them as English or not. In addition, if learners consider the loanword as English they then tend to have negative emotions which lead to avoidance of that particular word. On the other hand, if they consider the loanword as Japanese then the tendency is to have positive emotions, and that would activate usage of the loanword, depending on context.
