Since CS is used in the contact situation in China, not much has been done so far and it is conceivable that there is a difference between JFL and JSL learner’s strategies in CS usage, this paper discusses the achieve strategies used by the Chinese learners focusing on the Japanese-based contact situation in China. The study reveals (1) although the frequency of each type of CS varies significantly, the learners strive to make information transmission successful by using variety of CS, (2) the use of verbal CS is more frequent than that of the non-verbal strategies, and the learners establish a conversation not only solving the problems by themselves but cooperating with native speakers, and (3) the frequency of use of CS decreases as the length of time that the learners’ study increases.
