Focusing on unsolved problems and using a framework of unifying deixis and anaphora determine (Morizuka 2002), this study investigated how Japanese demonstratives usage is understood by Chinese-speaking learners through a multiple-choice test. The results were compared with developmental findings of Japanese native speakers. The study found that the difficulty of understanding the contexts in which demonstratives can be used affects their acquisition, and that learner proficiency level influences the understanding of those contexts.
