Although there has been research that has compared writings by Japanese native speakers and learners of Japanese, this research focused mainly on writings by learners, dividing them into those that were easy to understand and those that were hard to understand. Those that were hard to understand often had the following characteristics: (1) problems with words, expressions and grammar. (2) the amount of information the learners tried to communicate was less than that of those that were easy to understand. (3) there was a tendency to use the te-form frequently (4) the underuse of non-restrictive relative clause.
