Two reading classes were given to ten native-Spanish speaking learners of elementary or intermediate level Japanese. The setting of phrase boundaries and formation of pitch patterns were the principal learning items. The results of the instruction showed some improvement depending on the level of the learner's Japanese. As for production of phrase boundaries, the improvement of elementary learners was more evident than for intermediate learners, but as for the formation of pitch patterns, intermediate learners and learner who had had training in pronunciation showed more improvement than elementary learners. It is, therefore, suggested that syllabuses should be designed carefully reflecting the individual learner's speech level. After the analysis, it was confirmed that acquisition of intonation consists first of generation of phrase boundaries and then formation of pitch patterns, involving increase of pitch peaks and production of pitch accent.
