This study analyzes how teachers in an elementary school perceive teaching the school curriculum to non-Japanese students based on the Interdependence Hypothesis. The result of this study reveals that the teachers believe that proficiency in academic learning and the student's mother tongue does not affect each other. The reason being, it was difficult for the teachers to recognize any interdependence between L1 and L2, and the fact that the two languages indeed affect the academic learning of non-Japanese children. From the results mentioned above, it can be concluded that the humongous research proving the effectiveness of the Interdependence Hypothesis has largely been ignored in the elementary school in question. This suggests a need for workshops and training courses emphasizing the importance of the Interdependence Hypothesis.
