However, some students do not find such opportunities easily. There is not much research addressing how a student picks up \"back channels\" without access to those environments. We conducted a survey on Taiwanese students of Japanese who have not resided in Japan for a long-term. This thesis analyzes the data of the various forms of back channels used by Taiwanese students during their phone conversation with unknown Japanese. The data is compared to those used by Japanese native speakers. The result of the analysis was that while native Japanese speakers use more \"ha-type\" which is recognized as respectful form, Taiwanese students tend to use less respectful \"n-type\". Moreover, both native Japanese speakers and Taiwanese students use less \"e-type\".
