This article reports the results of a study on the effect of \"Free Association\" as a pre-reading activity on the reading comprehension of Japanese. The results indicate that 1) \"Free Association\" as a pre-reading activity facilitates reading comprehension, and 2) the quantity of \"Free Association\" protocol has a significant correlation with recall rates of the texts in which topics are similar to the \"Free Association\" key words.
