Thus far, few empirical studies hava been conducted to reveal what strategies language learners employ to comprehend the meanings of compound verbs and especially what aspects of compound verbs are difficult. This exploratory study addressed these questions on the empirical ground. This study focused on Japanese \"-komu\", probably the most productive verbal suffix to form compound verbs. 24 compound verbs using \"-komu\" were presented to three advanced learners of Japanese along with a set of questionnaire items, which were designed to elicit the target responses in intensive interview session. The following was the most typical strategy: Add the meaning of V2 to the meaning of V1 in combination of V1+V2. Learners tend to take the meaning of V2 to be \"enter\". This study, however, shows that this strategy is not effective in many cases, such as \"hairi-komu\", where \"hairu\" also means \"enter\", and \"oyogi-komu\", where the combination of \"swim\" and \"enter\" does not make sense.
