Although it is very valuable not only as a historical resource reflecting the contemporary ceramic industry, but also as an important source of information for the ceramic manufacturers and merchants of those days, it is not so well known today. This could be because it was published by a merchant, not by a big company or governmental organization. However, when thinking about the formation of the whole information system in modern Japan, this private newspaper with its various contents and a number of readers should be fairly evaluated. This paper clarifies the importance of “Touki Shouhou” by examining the personal history of the publisher, Katou Sukesaburou, who contributed to the development of the Japanese ceramic industry, and characteristic articles in the newspaper such as price rates, advertisements and extracts from other newspapers. Moreover, the circulation, delivery, and the newspapers’ remarkable readership are also analyzed to show how it was spread throughout Japan and\ helped its readers to share information.}, pages = {19--27}, title = {近代日本陶磁器業における業界新聞 : 『陶器商報』について}, volume = {13}, year = {2011} }
