En évoquant la trilogie de son auteur préféré, Valéry développe une théorie à partir d’une hypothèse dont il est curieusement convaincu a priori : Huysmans construirait son récit avec la compréhension parfaite du système du langage. Il s’agit d’un langage par lequel le lecteur quitte la réalité pour le monde que l’auteur ouvre dans son imagination. C’est pourquoi Valéry interprète la <<conversion>> de Durtal comme le passage du matériel au spirituel. Dans cette force du langage, Valéry voit la condition d’un auteur authentique, comme l’est à ses yeux Mallarmé : il doit posséder <<un dictionnaire de l’esprit>>, référence absolue de cette langue psychologique. La vraie tâche de Durtal, nous semble-t-il, consiste à en démontrer l’existence. Le mysticisme de Valéry est aujourd’hui beaucoup discuté par les chercheurs val\\\néryens, qui en révèlent le rôle primordial.
