However I will discuss that such misery was characteristic to most women in the Meiji period of Japan. Moreover, by researching the miserable life of Oseki, I would like to explore the real meaning of the Japanese“Modern” in the Meiji period, which, although brought to Japan from the West, was being realized on the basis of the patriarchal system.
