I consider discourses around “ Japayuki-san ” in articles of magazines for men and women, and about economy, labor problems and national security from 1985 to 1995. Through this approach, I find that “Japayuki-san” has various images and different meanings in each kind of magazine, because readers who receive information from magazines need their own convenient discourses around “ Japayuki-san ” in order to maintain and intensify their political, social, and cultural positions in the society. Moreover, I analyze how these images and meanings are involved with the process that we recognize “ Japayuki-san ” as a disparaging term.
