The older brother Noritaka Asakawa (1884-1964) and the younger brother Takumi Asakawa (1891-1931) recognized the importance of the traditional arts and techniques, which had been used during the daily life of the Korean, as an important cultural element of Korean art. Moreover, such ideas also gave them an opportunity to set out a ground for their theory of the Korean craft art. There appears to be significant progress upon the relationship between Korea and Japan today, yet it would be too much to say that a thorough understanding had been genuinely realized between these two nations. As mentioned earlier, the continuing bad feelings between these two nations, which arise from stereotypes and prejudices, may be a significant cause of the lack of understanding that continues to persist today. I'd like to propose the Asakawa Brothers' understanding of Korea as a viewpoint which is different from the previou\ s ones; that is, a viewpoint which contradicts the negative images and history which were brought about by Japanese colonial rule. Along with the thorough understanding of one's own culture such an attempt will enable, perhaps a better understanding of the foreign culture may become possible for both the Japanese and the Koreans.}, pages = {1--10}, title = {浅川伯教・巧兄弟の朝鮮理解の意義}, volume = {10}, year = {2008} }
