When 〜dasu means 'beginning,' it is parallel with the other suffix, 〜hazimeru. 〜dasu, however, has a different implication from 〜hazimeru, because it is derived from its original meaning, "move to out side." Previous researches have revealed that 〜dasu does not have intentionality or foreseeability. The present study tested whether the learners percept the difference between these two words through a test of 14 questions, and compared learner's meaning potential with Japanese native speakers'. The results said that learners understand the basic difference between the two words ; in case of prototype of 〜hazimeru and 〜dasu, learners' choice was similar to Japanese NS's. However, the learners showed an opposite tendency to Japanese NS's in less prototypical sentences. This means that the learners have difficulty in choosing proper word in less prototypical sentences although they perceive the difference on the whole.
