This study examines the importance of public pensions\\\nin terms of improving the self-reported health and risk among Japanese women or men who\\\nretired in 2008. Using data from 633 females and 358 mixed with 181 females and 177males in\\\nJapan, this research examines respondents’ health and risk as well as factors affecting both these\\\nlife aspects for women and men, including 60 years old retired person. Public pension data makes\\\nit possible to distinguish between two types of pension system: a “basic pension” for those who\\\nhave either no or only a brief work history, and a “welfare pension,” with a more earning-related\\\ncomponent. To compare these two types of pensions, relative measures of health and well-being\\\nwere constructed to account for impact of receiving a basic pension only. Overall, women’s health\\\nwas found to be maintained through receipt of the basic pension, with the gender differences of\\\nthe results as follows: In terms of women’s health or risk, the trust in basic pension appears to\\\nbe particularly important. Women’s risk tends to be more dependent on the quality and amount\\\nof basic pension.
