This article reviews Japanese as a second language vocabulary acquisition research done in Japan, by contrasting with those in other countries. The framework of this article is adopted from Read(2000). Read points out 4 categories of vocabulary acquisition research: (1)systematic vocabulary learning, (2)incidental vocabulary learning, (3)inferring word meanings from context, and (4)communication strategies. This article doesn’t deal with communication strategies, because it contains other factors other than vocabulary acquisition. Instead of communication strategies, I explain vocabulary learning strategies that much affect vocabulary acquisition. I also refer to other research in Japan that doesn’t fit to Read’s four categories.
