The target of the review includes those studies dealing with (1) the conditions on compounding the two elements to form compound verbs, (2) the meanings and usages of suffixing elements, and (3)cross-linguistic analyses of compound verbs. In order to suggest the need for future research, we discuss some of the major problems emerging when analyzing and categorizing diverse usages of polysemous suffixing elements, and show that a cognitive semantic approach provides an effective analytical tool overcoming those problems.\\\\r\\\\\\\nIt has been shown that learners of Japanese as a foreign language find it extremely difficult to acquire generalized semantic rules in the area of compound verbs and, as a result, they are simply overwhelmed by the semantic diversity. This also motivates more research to be carried out.
