It tries to find a clue in the Japanese teaching in the Australian primary and secondary education, which is regarded to have been playing a leading role in its Language Other Than English (LOTE) education. For that purpose, the paper reviews from the perspective of multicultural education the flow of various studies concerning the Japanese education, limiting the range of studies to those that take the Japanese education as a part of LOTE education and take it not only as just the study of language but also as the study of culture inextricably bound to the study of language itself. For the framework of the analyses, three core concepts of multicultural education put forth by Matsuo(1999), decentering, hybridization, diversification of diversity, are used.
