The analysis showed that the closing sections are often omitted in both Korean and Japanese chat conversations. Furthermore, in the [1beginning/middle part of the closing section], [expressions of appreciation] in Japanese chat and [promises of recontact] in Korean chat, lead to termination of conversation. As for the [2 end part of the closing section], it was found that [single emoticons] are used to end conversations in Japanese chat, while [comprehension sign] and [encouragement / happiness / health wishes] are used in Korean chat. It is argued that Korean chat displays a more active interaction as a greater number of components is used and the [expansion type] development pattern is more frequently observed than in Japanese chat. Finally, this paper concludes that the chat conversations in both countries have a unique structure and that a new kind of conversation structure appears in smartphone chat.
