The results revealed that, regarding the functions, more than 50% of backchannels had the “expression of emotion” function. As LINE chat conversations lack nonverbal cues, receivers indicate active participation in conversation through “expressions of emotion”. Regarding the response timing and message type of sending backchannels, most of the “immediate backchannels” (positioned immediately after the co-participant’s message) are transmitted without a substantial comment, whereas most of the “non-immediate backchannels” (positioned remotely from the co-participant’s message) are transmitted with a substantial comment. It is argued that in LINE chat conversations backchannels without substantial comments increase synchrony. On the other hand, in complex sequences, backchannels with substantial comments make it easier to identify which message the backchannel is responding to. From this, we can say that backchannels are used for discourse management.
