At the same time, university students\u0027 employment prospects are easily influenced by factors such as economic conditions, and many take jobs that do not fit the degrees they have obtained. This study analyzed interviews to elucidate students’ attitudes toward advancing to universities, their thoughts regarding their own futures, and hopes for employment. The data used in the analysis consisted of the answers of 8 German university students in 2015 aged 19–34 years to questions concerning their employment, families, and so on. The results of the analysis showed that (1) not only economic independence and living away from home but also possession of a firm vision for the future increased students’ sense of independence; (2) when women discussed their visions for the future, their accounts were based on having a family; and (3) students choose majors aligned with their interests and concerns and select occupations fitting their university studies. German students choose their majors based on their idea of future occupations they have held since before advancing to university.
