| 内容記述 | The purpose of this paper is to investigate how Thai Japanese Speakers and Japanese Native Speakers as subordinates use honorifics in roleplay-based business conversations and analyze the indexical functions by applying the concept of speech level and categorizing it into 3 levels which are a masu form mixed with Sonkeigo and Kenjougo, a regular masu form and a non-masu form. The findings indicated that Thai Japanese Speakers primarily used masu form, but Japanese Native Speakers used masu form mixed with Sonkeigo and Kenjougo which is considered as a more polite form than the regular masu form. Speech level shift to the non-masu form was observed in both Thai Japanese Speakers and Japanese Native Speakers’ utterances. In terms of indexical functions, this research found that throughout each level of the speech levels a conversational context was created. It showed interlocutors’ relationship and speakers’ roles in such contexts. This study contributed to a better understanding that the speech level as linguistic forms, in both native and non-native speakers’ utterances, can perform complex functions depending on contexts. |
