| 内容記述 | This study aims to clarify the notion of cosmetology in modern Japan, focusing on the Taisho era. This study first deals with “The Time Exhibition” held in 1920 as a part of the state-made movement called “the movement for living conditions improvements.” It questioned the time wasted on women’s cosmetology and tie-hair, utilizing pictures and diagrams. Thus, it functioned as a device to visualize the discipline of standard cosmetology. Second, this study deals with “practical books”（i.e. encyclopedias, encyclopedias of women’s lives, and technical cosmetology books）. They proposed efficient, economical, and scientific makeup methods, which conform to the principles of the movement for living conditions improvement. They emphasized “the harmony of the whole body,” based on skincare, makeup, hair, and clothing. They also taught that this harmony required not only technical practices but also beautiful expressions and spirit and requested their readers to take account of other people’s eyes. They attempted to recapture beauty, building on science and economic sensibility promoted in the modernization process. |
