| 内容記述 | The purpose of this paper is to see how Nel Noddings (1929-2022) has changed its concept from “engrossment” to “attention” and what happened in the background. The analysis is based on four works by Noddings, Caring (1984), The Challenge to Care in Schools (1992), Starting at Home (2002), and The Maternal Factor (2010). It was the “disposability” claimed by Gabriel Marcel (1889-1973), the French philosopher and playwright, that led Noddings to the concept of “engrossment” that was first used. The change from "engrossment" to "attention" was influenced by the French philosopher Simone Weil (1909-43) and the British novelist and philosopher Iris Murdoch (1919-99). Focusing on Marcel's disposability and the concepts of attention by Weil and Murdoch, I analyze the transformation of Noddings's caring theory. As a result, this transformation urges us to rethink our assessment on caring suggested by Noddings which regarding as a care ethics of self-sacrificing and depending on emotional aspects of one caring. | |||||||||
