| 内容記述 | The name of the imaginary town Stepford, the setting of Ira Levin's best-selling novel The Stepford Wives （1972）, has been used as an adjective meaning ‘obedient’. This use originates from Levin's story in which wives residing in the town are transformed into robots by their husbands in order to conform to the social norms of femininity. They work as perfect wives and mothers within their homes; moreover, they follow the standard of beauty required of women. The glamour associated with their breasts is particularly emphasized. Considering the fact that women have been subdued through the fragmentation and fetishization of their bodies, and that their breasts have been treated as one of the primary objects of this control, Levin's novel is regarded as a work that problematizes the gendered body and its control. However, on examining the representations in Levin's original work and two of its film versions, we notice a shift in the understanding of this bodily control. Following an overview of the cultural history associated with women's breasts, this article examines the changes in these literary and visual rep\ resentations, and how the development of theory related to the body reflected these changes. |
