| 内容記述 | In Herman Melville's Moby-Dick, Ahab, the captain of the Pequod, embodies a self that is not fixed within a particular regime of discourses. Ishmael, who is the only survivor from the shipwreck, tells his readers that he perceived “awe” in the captain. This article examines Ahab's “awe” in terms of the modification of his body, the notions of masculinity in nineteenth-century American whalers, and of his eyes, within which the source of his “awe” is observed. First, Ahab, who has an artificial leg made of a whale jawbone, stands as both sound and unsound. By doing so, he reestablishes himself as an undefined existence. Second, Ahab also moves across the modes of masculinity, which are different between men before and behind the mast in whalers, and embodies a certain kind of masculinity that cannot be reduced to either one. Lastly, Ahab transmits his own masculinity or “awe” through his eyes. His eyes resist any stereotypical interpretation of him, and so he terrifies and yet attracts his crew. It is the “awe” Ahab arouses in the crew, that is, a feeling in which fear and respect are mixed, that represents his ow\ n masculine self. |
