| 内容記述 | T・E・ローレンス『知恵の七柱』とラドクリフ・ホール『孤独の泉』は、ともに第一次大戦に従軍した同性愛登場人物を描いた文学であるが、戦中の管理統制の影響が続く1920年代において、裁判所から発禁処分を受けたのは1928年に出版された『孤独の泉』だけだった。大戦間期に出版された両作品に対する非対称の検閲を、同時代の定期刊行物を用いて歴史的観点から比較考察することに、本稿の目的はある。当時は英国の男女普通選挙制が確立され、〈帝国〉にとっての理想的な市民像が議論されたが、この市民論は読者論という形をとって『孤独の泉』裁判においてもウィンストン・チャーチルによる『知恵の七柱』の書評においても論じられた。両作品をめぐる読者市民像の分析の結果、〈帝国〉はホモソーシャルな読者空間を補完すべく、「産む市民」ではない女の同性愛を排除し、ジェンダー非対称の検閲をおこなったと結論付けられる。さらにこの不均衡な選別は、男と女の同性愛者の連帯を阻むことをも可能にしたのである。 | |||||

| 内容記述 | T. E. Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom and Radclyffe Hall's The Well of Loneliness both depict the homosexual characters who served in the Great War. In the wartime atmosphere of information control remaining in the 1920s, The Well of Loneliness was legally banned whereas Seven Pillars was greatly advertised. The paper aims to analyze the asymmetrical censorship imposed on the two novels in the historical context. The novels were published when the ideal citizenship for “the Empire” was greatly discussed after the achievement of Universal Suffrage. The concern for the ideal citizen was projected implicitly at the Well trial as well as in Winston Churchill's book review on Seven Pillars, which focused on the novel's prospective readers. An analysis of these reader/citizen images through their contemporary periodicals reveals: “the Empire” effectively exercised a powerful censorship in an asymmetrical way in order to complement the homosocial sphere, excluding any women homosexuals from the concept of citizen. This imperial inspection differentiated by gender, therefore, stood in the way of any possible solidar\ ity between men and women homosexuals. |
