| 内容記述 | 19世紀アメリカの作家、ハーマン・メルヴィルは、洋上を主な舞台として男だけの世界を描き続けた作家である。その彼の作品の中で、『ピエール』は、陸上を舞台に女が登場してくるという点で異色の作品であり、彼のジェンダー／セクシュアリティ観をみるうえできわめて重要である。本研究は、セクシュアリティと密接に関わっている名前に着目し、この作品の主人公ピエール・グレンディニングのセクシュアリティを、彼の姓であるグレンディニングという名前との関わりで考察している。彼の姓と接点を持つメアリー、イザベル、グレンとの関係からみて、ピエールのセクシュアリティは性差の境があいまいなものである。そして、そのセクシュアリティももとになって引き起こされるピエールとグレンの対立を、そこでルーシーが果たす役割にも注目して読み解くと、その対立が彼らの共有する名前が保証する男としての性的アイデンティティをめぐるものだとも言える。 | |||||

| 内容記述 | Herman Melville, known as a writer who depicts a world without women. Among his novels Pierre, or the Ambiguities is peculiar. Concerning his seventh novel he first intended to provide a “romance” ashore for his readers. This “domestic” novel portrays “sexually deviant” relationships between its protagonist, Pierre, and other characters in the light of domestic ideology prevalent in the days. This article takes up the family name of Pierre Glendinning, which can be regarded as related to his ambiguous sexuality. That ambiguity can be attributed to his relationships with those who share his family name: his mother, his half-sister and his cousin. Then, this article discusses his conflict with his cousin over Lucy Tartan, who is supposed to be married to the heir of the Glendinning and to confer male identity on Pierre. In view of her role it can be said that he confronts his cousin for his identity. | |||||
